Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages and Rhodolith Facies Evolution in Post-LGM Sediments from the Pontine Archipelago Shelf (Central Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy)

چکیده

The seabed of the Pontine Archipelago (Tyrrhenian Sea) insular shelf is peculiar as it characterized by a mixed siliciclastic–carbonate sedimentation. In order to reconstruct Late Quaternary paleoenvironmental evolution Archipelago, this study investigates succession facies recorded two sediment cores. For purpose, benthic foraminifera and rhodoliths assemblages were considered. cores (post-Last Glacial Maximum in age) collected at 60 (CS1) 122 m (Caro1) depth on off Ponza Island. paleontological data compared with seismo-stratigraphic lithological evidence. show deepening succession, transition from basal rhodolith-rich biodetritic coarse sand surface coralline-barren silty sand. This more evident along core Caro1 (from bottom top), deeper water than CS1. support evidence, was fairly constant increase amount planktonic foraminiferal marked change Asterigerinata mamilla Lobatula lobatula assemblage Cassidulina carinata assemblage). Interestingly, dating allowed us extend 13,000 years BP rhodolith record indicating possible presence an active carbonate factory that time.

Sedimentary facies and foraminiferal assemblages from [i]Posidonia oceanica[i] meadows of western Mediterranean Sea

Sedimentary facies and foraminiferal assemblages of sediments sampled into seven Posidonia oceanica meadows from Western Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Six sampling sites are localised in Italy (Maratea, Ponza Island, Santa Marinella, Giglio Island, Osalla and Alghero), and one in France (Argentella, Crovani Bay, Corsica). The role of P. oceanica meadows in the sedimentary processes was i...

Seasonal dynamics and decadal changes of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the western Baltic Sea (NW Europe)

Living benthic foraminiferal assemblages were monitored between January and July 2004 in the Kiel Bight, Baltic Sea. Phytoplankton blooms and the deposition of organic detritus were depicted by fluorometer hydro casts and pigment concentrations in surface sediments. Three depositional pulses of organic matter were identified by high phytoplankton concentrations above the sea floor and elevated ...
